An Introduction to Seismology, Earthquakes, and Earth Structure
When Sue Hough asked me to review this new textbook I accepted immediately. I've been watching it mature for almost two decades and am pleased it is now actually published as a real textbook. I first became aware of a much earlier draft when I began teaching and was tasked to teach an introductory seismology course for new graduate students. At that time (early 1980's) there was a major gap in ...
متن کاملBridging earthquakes and earth structure along the northern San Andreas Fault
The objective of this proposal is to characterize and understand the processes by which the crust within and adjacent to the Northern San Andreas Fault Zone (NSAFZ) deforms over 10s of kyr to several Myr to link coand inter-seismic deformation to that observed geologically. I will use for this task high resolution GeoEarthScope Airborne Laser Swath Mapping (ALSM) and more broadly available lowe...
متن کاملEarth tides can trigger shallow thrust fault earthquakes.
We show a correlation between the occurrence of shallow thrust earthquakes and the occurrence of the strongest tides. The rate of earthquakes varies from the background rate by a factor of 3 with the tidal stress. The highest correlation is found when we assume a coefficient of friction of mu = 0.4 for the crust, although we see good correlation for mu between 0.2 and 0.6. Our results quantify ...
متن کاملRapid Full-Wave Centroid Moment Tensor (CMT) Inversion in a Three-Dimensional Earth Structure Model for Earthquakes in Southern California
S U M M A R Y A central problem of seismology is the inversion of regional waveform data for models of earthquake sources. In regions such as Southern California, preliminary 3-D earth structure models are already available, and efficient numerical methods have been developed for 3-D anelastic wave-propagation simulations. We describe an automated procedure that utilizes these capabilities to d...
متن کاملCrustal Structure of the Earth
The boundary between the crust and the mantle was discovered by Mohorovicic in 1909 under the European continent. Subsquent research in this century established the major differences between the continental and oceanic crust; a typical thickness for the continental crust is 30-50 km while a typical thickness for me oceanic crusts is 6 km. In terms of history the continental crust contains a muc...
